Responsibilities of Apprentice Station Electrician:
- Install communications systems for data acquisition, including but not limited to antennas, radios, coaxial cables and fiber optic cables.
- Perform inspections for quality control and equipment monitoring, including infrared scans, oil testing and dissolved gas analysis;
- report findings and make recommendations to engineering staff for the effective establishment of the required maintenance schedule.
- Test, analyze and communicate the status of hazardous insulating materials, such as PCBs present in oil and the purity or contamination level of SF 6;
- Intervene in conditions affecting emergency systems, perform troubleshooting diagnosis and repair faulty equipment, if possible, in order to ensure safe operation and restoration of power to customers.
- Inspection and safe operation of many vehicle types, including but not limited to vans with sliding side doors, high volume vans, workshop trucks, pickup trucks, radial boom cranes, trailers, boom lifts, forklifts and elevated work platforms.
- Carry out switching operations for the maintenance of electrical substations, load distribution and construction activities.
- Monitor, supervise and ensure the safety and productivity of a wide variety of internal and external trades and contractors in support of ongoing construction and maintenance activities.
- Maintain and manage project compliance with all internal and external safety standards and documents.
- Utility Work Protection Code, Ontario Regulation 22/04, Hydro Ottawa Limited’s construction audit program, the Ontario Electrical Code and Ministry of Labor project notices.
- Train apprentices if necessary.
- Sourcing, budgeting and purchasing in-stock and non-stock items and equipment for maintenance and construction projects.
- Perform other related tasks as required.
Eligibility Criteria for Apprentice Station Electrician:
- High school diploma.
- Community college diploma (2 years) in electricity or electronics.
- Above average mechanical, reading and mathematical aptitude.
- Training in computer software will be consider an asset.
- Forklift operator certification.
- Radial Jib Crane Operator Certification.
- Propane gas certification.
- Certificate of competency in CPR/first aid.
- Utility Work Protection Code.
Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of English is essential, both orally and in writing.
- Bilingualism (English/French) will be considered an asset.
- Valid class G driving license
- Ability to obtain a class DZ driving license.
- Government of Canada security clearance.
Successful candidates will be required, as part of the selection process, to undergo a mechanical, arithmetic and writing aptitude test.
